A Terra, a corda e o gato / The Earth, the rope and the cat

Eis um enigma que tem gerado muita polémica aqui pelas aldeias:

1. Suponham que o planeta Terra tem uma forma esférica perfeita.
2. Suponham que se aperta uma corda a toda a volta da Terra (i.e. sobre um meridiano)
3. Suponham que aumentam 1 metro a essa corda
4. Suponham que, uma vez que a corda ficou mais lassa, a afastam da superfície da Terra de igual forma (ie: que qualquer ponto da corda fica à mesma distância da superficie da Terra).

5. A pergunta é: Passa um gato por baixo (entre a corda e a superfície da Terra)?

Uma dica: é matemática elementar, meus caros...

Here's a challenge that has generated lots of hype around my friends:

1. Suppose that the Earth is a perfect sphere.
2. Suppose that a rope is tighten around the Earth (along a meridian).
3. Suppose that you add 1 meter (39.4 inches) to the rope.
4. Suppose that you move away the rope from the Earth surface so it stays at an uniform distance from it.

5. The question is: can a cat pass under the rope (between the rope and the Earth surface)?

A tip: It´s elementar math, fellows...
